Maria is a coastal municipality in the island province of Siquijor.

The municipality has a land area of 53.37 square kilometers or 20.61 square miles which constitutes 15.81% of Siquijor's total area. Its population as determined by the 2015 Census was 13,828. This represented 14.41% of the total population of Siquijor province, or 0.19% of the overall population of the Central Visayas region. Based on these figures, the population density is computed at 259 inhabitants per square kilometer or 671 inhabitants per square mile.

Demographics

According to the 2015 Census, the age group with the highest population in Maria is 15 to 19, with 1,411 individuals. Conversely, the age group with the lowest population is Under 1, with 182 individuals.

Combining age groups together, those aged 14 and below, consisting of the the young dependent population which include infants/babies, children and young adolescents/teenagers, make up an aggregate of 27.28% (3,772). Those aged 15 up to 64, roughly, the economically active population and actual or potential members of the work force, constitute a total of 62.49% (8,641). Finally, old dependent population consisting of the senior citizens, those aged 65 and over, total 10.23% (1,415) in all.

The computed Age Dependency Ratios mean that among the population of Maria, there are 44 youth dependents to every 100 of the working age population; there are 16 aged/senior citizens to every 100 of the working population; and overall, there are 60 dependents (young and old-age) to every 100 of the working population.

The population of Maria grew from 9,335 in 1960 to 13,828 in 2015, an increase of 4,493 people. The latest census figures in 2015 denote a positive growth rate of 0.62%, or an increase of 445 people, from the previous population of 13,383 in 2010.
